Approaches for selecting and sequencing operations automatically for rotational parts are presented. In particular, a fuzzy logic approach to generating machining operations according to a part's type, size, accuracy and surface finish is proposed. An algorithm based on the feature relationship matrix for ranking the priorities of forming features is presented. Setup planning is achieved by grouping operations with the same tool approach direction (TAD) and machine resource. A final process plan is determined based on the least number of setups subject to geometric and technical constraints. The foregoing methods and procedures are incorporated into the IPPS_R (Intelligent Process Planning System for Rotating Parts). The IPPS_R system is developed and implemented in Visual C++. A sample part is utilized to illustrate the methods and procedures developed.
