Erosion of an Artificial Beach Constructed on Reclaimed Land

About 30 years have passed since artificial beaches were built in Japan, and some maintenance problems have appeared in these beaches. This paper reports on the shoreline erosion of an artificial beach “Inagenohama” in Chiba prefecture. This beach is constructed on reclaimed land, which has undergone land subsidence. The beach profile change is analyzed by wave and land subsidence characteristics. As a result, it is found that beach erosion is strongly related to land subsidence, and the erosion rate caused by subsidence is about 30 percent, compared to that caused by waves.
