Countless hours have been spent over the last decade developing behaviors for widely used computer generated force simulations such as ModSAF, JSAF, CCTT SAF and the OneSAF Testbed Baseline. This effort continues now with OneSAF. Although the behavior authoring task has been simplified to some extent through the development of finite state machine abstractions, reusable primitive behaviors, and graphical editors, behaviors are still complex and creating correct behaviors is time consuming. We are exploring how to apply case-based reasoning to the behavior design problem to facilitate behavior reuse. The testbed for this effort is an existing graphical behavior editor that allows composition of behaviors from a repository of primitive behaviors, predicate functions, communication actions, and other composite behaviors. We have developed a prototype case-based reasoning tool that queries the user about the characteristics of a desired behavior, computes indices describing the behavior characteristics, and then scores existing behaviors based on their relevance to the desired behavior. We have developed indices related to the type of unit running the behavior, the general function of the behavior, and the interaction of the unit's subordinates.
