The kinetics of gas transport through bi-layer membranes consisting of self-assembled cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) on polylactic acid (PLA) support was studied by gas phase permeation techniques: their gas barrier properties were explained thanks to depth-profiled PALS (Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy) measurements. CNF were then dispersed at different concentration in PLA matrix: these nano-composite were also studied with PALS and gas permeation. The gas barrier properties of CNF-PLA bi-layer will be reviewed and the new results on nano-composite discussed.
