Between now and 2010, we can be sure that the business environment for sugar players in a whole range of countries and regions will be subject to change. Policy protection may be diminished in response to global or regional trade liberalisation. And where such protection is already low or non-existent, it may be developments in world market price levels and volatility that are the key concerns of market participants. In this environment, there are both short term and longer term challenges for companies in the sugar business. In the short term, maintaining stability may be the primary concern, while in the longer term the focus is strategic – which markets offer the best prospects?
