A study was conducted in peatland in Central Kalimantan and West Kalimantan taken as representing tropical peatland with several different types of land use. Peat sampling and measurements of CO2 emissions were conducted in two periods with a one year interval. The amount of CO2 released from the peatland in Central Kalimantan ranged from 0.29 to 0.82 g CO2 m~(-2) h~(-1), whereas CO2 emission from the peatland in West Kalimantan ranged from 0.31 to 1.24 g CO2 m~(-2) h~(-1). There were no substantial differences in CO2 emission between the first and second years. The amount of CO2 released is influenced by water level from the peat surface. The lower the water level from the surface of peat soil the higher the CO2 emission from the peat. In order to reduce the amount of CO2 emission released from the peat the ground water level of the peatland utilised for cropping needs to be managed accordingly.
