A multilayer electroceramic actuator is proposed for use in the control of saw blade vibrations. Finite element techniques are used to model the saw blade and actuator. The finite element model of the saw blade has been validated by an experimental modal analysis. The actuator is designed to dampen the lower vibrational modes of the saw blade while at the same time optimizing the response of the multilayer ceramic system. The analysis of saw blade vibration and actuator stresses may enable the control of vibrations that cause a loss of precision during cutting operations.
