The first part of the work deals with the necessary conditions for the determination of structural parameters with the sensitivity approach; in particular, an algebraic demonstration gives the conditions which are necessary to the identification of a given number of structural parameters in relation to the number of measured and experimental modes and degrees of freedom. In a second part, this analysis is further extended, showing that the above said conditions, though being necessary, are not sufficient: using a global measure of the covariance matrix of estimated parameters, a strategy is proposed for the optimal planning of the degrees of freedom to be measured, both in number and in position. Some representative structures allow to show the relevant points of the procedure, and the practical aspects of the problem are elucidated in the light of the needs of the mechanical designer.
