Oral Opioid Titration Using Single Dose 5 mg Oxycontin Tablets

We tried to titrate opioid-naive cancer pain patients using only 5mg oxycontin tablets. The scheme of administration is as follows; when pain is not acceptable 1 hour after the first dose, another tablet is given and the dose 12 hours after the first intake is increased by 5 mg. The second additional dose is given in the same way if needed. Overall, VAS decreased from 6.2 cm to 1.5cm in 48 hours. The number of patients in which the final VAS was 2 cm or less accounted for 78% of the total. The mean dose of Oxc was 14.4 mg. Nausea and/or vomiting was seen in 22%.
