Development process re-engineering is key to the concurrent design. Axiomatic Design methodology provides a theoretical basis for the traditional process decomposing. The function-structure hierarchy is built by zigzagging mapping. The independence axiom ensures the functions' independence. The design activities and tasks can be determined according to the function-structure. The relationships between each activity are established by analyzing the full design matrix. The uncoupled relation means that the design activities are mutually separable, and can be conducted concurrently so that the overall cycle time can be greatly reduced. The decoupled relation shows the sequence by which the design activities should be conducted and the relationships between activities so that the whole process can be managed effectively. The design process of the gate valve is put forward using this method.
