The cable-stayed Shipshaw bridge, which crosses the Sagucnay river near Jonquiere, Quebec, suffered structural damage during the November 25, 1988 Saguenay earthquake (M{sub}L = 6,0). One of four anchorage plates connecting the steel box girders to one abutment failed due to the ground shaking. This paper compares the results of the modal analysis and testing conducted to determine the dynamic properties of the bridge. This comparison validated the dynamic model of the bridge used in a time-step analysis to explain the cause of failure. Measured natural frequencies and mode shapes are compared with the corresponding computed values. The paper also includes a description of the in-situ vibration measurements in which a 44 ton truck traveling on the bridge was used as dynamic excitation.
