The performance of a headlamp system involving the combination of median and high-flux halogen sources with a newly developed automotive active headlamp lens material (edge glow technology) is discussed. The system presented is a cost-effective alternative filling the beam pattern and color performance gap between economic halogen and costly HID systems, while conforming to the applicable vehicle lighting regulations. A case is illustrated in which HID color is successfully matched using a high-flux HIR2 halogen light source.
