The authors review different possible interpretations for deep-seated gravitational slope deformations showing mid-slope trenches and double ridges. Simple models may account for some features but it is necessary to use more complex deformation modes of a jointed rock mass to get some interesting results. DEM numerical analysis has been used to investigate the deformation that takes place in a fractured rock mass when a valley is created. The case of Sechilienne landslide (France) is presented in detail.
