This paper presents a multi-feed scheme to trim pressure before supplying an existing UK network where the current operating regime is proving to be unreliable due an unacceptably high number of bursts. A turbine bypass with pressure reducing valves (PRVs) which discharge in a break pressure tank (BPT) are studied altogether. A computer model was built in WANDA Transient software to examine two scenarios: 1) Extended period simulation, to assess the system behaviour in normal operation with the BPT level controlled by the Turbine PID controller or by the bypass PRV PID controller, and 2) Transient conditions based on a turbine failure and a bypass PRV switchover. Results showed that pressure surges are within acceptable limits in all scenarios when the recommended rules of operation are followed.
