Granular Iron Oxide Stir-in Pigments for Coatings-Taking the Grind out of Dispersion

Traditional pigments require a laborious milling/grinding process or they will otherwise form lumps and not color the paint properly. BASF's innovative Xfast~R stir-in pigments are neither a pigment powder nor a traditional pigment preparation. Xfast~R is forming a completely new and independent class, which can be stirred directly into waterborne systems. The advantages of the stir-in class can be summarized as fast, safe and clean under various aspects. At present 18 different Xfast~R stir-in grades have been commercialized. The range includes organic and inorganic pigments. Within the inorganic pigments a bismuth vanadate grade and five different iron oxide grades are available: the opaque yellow and red grades, a semi-transparent red and the transparent yellow and red grades. The performance of granular stir-in pigments for mainly water based decorative coatings will be shown.
