Health education as part of health promotion and prevention of chronic lifestyle diseases in an international cooperation project

As public health nurses, we had an opportunity to participate in the international cooperation project, which was aimed at strengthening the health care system and preventing chronic lifestyle diseases in Jamaica. Through this project, we have taken charge of health education. Until now, people who needed lifestyle guidance and clinical consultation following the clinical examination received individual health education in Jamaica, However, project staff provided instructions to a small group that comprised patients with the same chronic lifestyle disease,, People received an opportunity to become aware of their individual health conditions through the educational activities, As a result of having received these instructions, residents have begun to change their behavior patterns. In addition, instructional teaching materials were developed to improve understanding of health education. Henceforth, to establish and promote measures to prevent chronic lifestyle diseases, it is necessary for every resident to take an interest in his or her own health. They must acquire the knowledge needed to change their behavior patterns and possess the willpower to proceed toward a state of good health.
