Structural diagnosis can be performed according to two different strategies: a) knowledge of the undamaged linear state and comparisons with current conditions; b) detection of symptoms of the fault that are contained in the structural response. Methods based on Volterra series representation of the input/output relationship belong to the first category and usually retain a very rigorous mathematical framework, as in the case of the methodology that is described in the first part of this memory. Conversely, in the second part of the paper, a symptom based approach is reported, which is founded on a pattern recognition strategy applied to the analytical representation of response signals.
