Transient Elastodynamic Analysis of Plane Structures Using Coons-Patch Macroelements and Modal Superposition

We have recently proposed a new computational method based on Coons' interpolation formula for the construction of large finite elements with degrees of freedom appearing mostly along the boundaries of a structure. So far, these Coons-patch macroelements were successfully applied to the analysis of elastic and potential problems. Now, this paper investigates their performance in calculating transient phenomena using linear elastic modal analysis. The proposed method is sustained by two numerical tests on a rectangular structure under plane-stress conditions subjected to a shear impulse and a dam under harmonic excitation. It was found that the consistent global mass matrix of the proposed macroelements leads to reliable results of the same accuracy with the conventional finite element solution, of course with the same number of nodes along the boundary of the structure.
