The reactions of organic halides at metal surfaces have long been used to produce reactive synthetic building blocks. For example, the formation and use of Qrignard reagents is widely known. However, until recently, the difficulty of knowing the morphology of the reacting magnesium surface has prevented the measurement of heterogeneous rate constants. We report on a novel technique using in situ photomicroscopy to measure reaction rates at individuals sites, allowing calculation of absolute heterogeneous rate constants, ks, for the formation of Grignard reagents. By measuring ks over a range of temperatures, we obtain Arrhenius parameters and explore their implications for the transition state of the reaction. We also describe preliminary results for the reaction of allyl bromide at indium surfaces.
