Anomalous Transmission Loss due to Bathymetry Variation

An acoustic propagation experiment was conducted in the East Sea in July 2017. Two types of explosive sources detonated at depths of 25 m and 50 m were used to calculate the transmission loss (TL) along ranges. The TL at the depth of 50 m explosive source are found largely anomalous in the frequency band of 300Hz-500Hz at range about 40 km, while only minor anomalies of the TL at the depth of 25 m is observed. It is well known that, the sound propagation in shallow water is greatly influenced by the properties of the seabed, such as bathymetry and sediment acoustic parameters, which may cause anomalous TL. This paper compares the results of the experiment with the prediction using a range-dependent sound propagation model. Numerous synthetic simulations have been calculated to replicate the experimental results. From these simulations, it has been demonstrated that the bathymetry variation can affect the TL in specific frequency band.
