Several techniques have been proposed in recent years to use FEA results for completion of experimental mode shapes with missing DOF's, such as rotational DOF's. This paper discusses a generalized correlation technique based on orthogonal projection. This technique can be used to complete the experimental model but also to generate smoothed experimental mode shapes. The use of smoothed modal models in sensitivity analysis and structural modification simulation is evaluated by means of a case study. It is shown that the smoothed modal model, which combines the benefits of both the experimental and the analytical approach, is a more reliable model to predict structural modifications than both the initial experimental and analytical models.
