INTEGRATED CONTACTLESS SMART CARD FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN SINGAPORE - PROCUREMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION

A fully integrated ticketing system on a contactless smart card platform was launched to the public in April 2002. Enhanced Integrated Fare System (EIFS) chalks up more than 4 million transactions each day with almost 6 mill cards in circulation. It replaces the magnetic Integrated Ticketing System (ITS) that was in place till then, for the purpose of fare collection for all modes of transport in Singapore. The principal reason for this change was to overcome the technical restrictions so as to meet enhanced capacity and throughput requirements, brought about by the expanding rail system. This paper traces the technical requirements, various stages of procurement and implementation of the various subsystems leading to the fully integrated contactless fare collection system in Singapore.
