OVERVIEW OF THE SOUTH CHINA SEA MONSOON EXPERIMENT (SCSMEX)

Under the support of the Ministry of National Science and Technology, the SCSMEX has made a great success not only in field observations but also in scientific achievements. Up to now, this project has published three monographs and three special issues in the journals. About 222 scientific papers have been published, which produced a great influence at home and abroad, leading to further understanding the physical process of the East Asian monsoon. It is also noted that the « Climatological ATLAS for Asian Summer Monsoon » published by Macau Foundation in cooperation with the SCSMEX project may be the first complete atlas of Asian monsoon up to now. The SCSMEX has set up a comprehensive and complete database since April 2001, which included meteorological observation data, special observation and oceanographic observation data, satellite cloud imagery, radar observation data, limited area assimilation data, TBB data , and precipitation data retrieved from radar data and so on. The datasets are available by visiting the SCSMEX databank home page ( http://ncc.cma.gov.cn/ex-docs/index.shtml). The data obtained from the field observation has also been put in four-dimensional data assimilation system by Japan, USA and so on. At present, these data has been widely used at home and abroad. The main research achievements of the SCSMEX will be summarized as follows.
