AUTOMATED SYSTEMS/ GENERAL OVERVIEW: Overview of automated people movers in the world

The technology that has given us driverless metros started in the 1960s with visions of driverless taxi networks still referred to as PRT. Today 115 automated people movers are in service around the world - one-sixth of them as driverless metros. Most are smaller in scale and capacity than metros, including simple, hectometric shuttles. These are increasingly being to extend the pedestrian reach of metro stations, thereby enlarging service areas, ridership, and beneficial real estate impacts that metros bring. Supportive public policies to encourage private investment are needed.
