The stowage planning for container is a core link in container transportation system. In order to take full use of advantage of this opportunity, the container stowage planning along the calling ports of the ship route must be carried out efficiently; With the development of containerships being larger in volume, carrying more containers and developing of intermodal transport services, stowage planning for container is becoming urgently demanded and more complicated. The research of stowage planning for containerships is of great significance, because it can improve the level of intelligent management and efficiency of container transportation. This paper firstly reviews the progress of containership stowage planning at home and abroad, including the development of containerships stowage planning, applications of varies of optimization methods and computer techniques in this problem. Then, the complexities based on containerships stowage planning is discussed and the investigation-to-be needed is pointed out. The paper will offer a reference for further research of problem.
