System identification involves the modification of a structural model to accurately reflect actual structural behavior. The model modification process is described herein, including theory and previous implementation. Current, efficient implementation, via closed-form response sensitivity calculations and design variable linking, is given. Forced-vibration testing and subsequent model modification are presented for a concrete arch dam and a steel offshore oil platform containing 658 and 2430 degrees-of-freedom, respectively. The efficient algorithms are shown to take model modification from a trial-and-error, brute force approach to one that is systematic, rational, and economical.
