Initiatives of the Institute of Geology and Mineral Explorations of Greece for the Establishment of Geoparks in Cooperation with Local Authorities and UNESCO

@@Greece, although very small at least comparing to China, is a country with richness and vari ety in respect to areas with high potential for geological heritage conservation. These areas con tain appreciable geological- geomorphological features and landscapes ("speaking" tectonic features, numerous sites with characteristic fossils, various volcanic forms, Karstic forms, ancient coasts, ancient famous mines, modern geological processes etc.). Some of these features are of international importance for geosciences and have ex principium the prerequisites for the estab lishment of a geopark with the meaning UNESCO gives to this term (public mainly territory,with sound geological features for scientific, educational, tourist uses and with management po tentiality) .
