A volatile organic compounds(VOC)emission factor development program was performed on the mold exhaust serving an injection molding machine in June 2001 at the S.C.Johnson Waxdale plant located in Sturtevant,Wisconsin.Specifically,this project was performed to develop separate VOC emission factors(lb VOC/ton material processed)for the injection molding of polypropylene homopolymer resin,polypropylene copolymer resin,and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene(ABS)composite resin.Summa canisters were used to collect VOC samples off the mold head of the injection molding machine for subsequent analysis using Method TO-14A and SW-846 Method 8260B.The determined emission factors include the sum of the speciated compounds with measured concentrations above detection limits,tentatively identified compounds(TIC's)with concentrations above detection limits,and all other compounds on the TO-14A list with concentrations at or below detection limits.Discussion will include sampling methodology,results,and comparisons with published emission factors for extrusion of ABS and polypropylene polymer resins.A survey was also conducted to search for other VOC emission factor data for injection molding of these resins,but no published studies were found.
