e-Teaching'Hands On'Auditing Skills to a Global Audience:Strategies and Lessons Learned

"How do we effectively migrate a hands-on in-person skill-building class into a digitized environment to reach a global audience while controlling costs and ensuring consistency?"This was the question posed by General Electric Company's(GE)Corporate Environmental Programs(CEP)department in late 2001 as the Environmental,Health and Safety(EHS)training curriculum was evaluated.At the time,several training programs were already migrating toward a digitized e-learning environment;these were primarily cognitive learning courses that allowed participants to learn about government and GE requirements and demonstrate understanding via post-course exams.However,there was some concern and skepticism about the ability to effectively transition skills-learning courses,like CEP's EHS Audit Skills course,to an on-line delivery system.Interest in the EHS Audit Skills course,considered a key part of GE's overall EHS compliance and management program,had languished with less than 30 people attending this course per year,due primarily to travel and budget restrictions.This course became the focus of a CEP and Business-level attack team for development and launch in a global digitized environment.
