In the fall of 1999,a monitoring program was initiated to determine the baseline for evaluating the effectiveness of a 1-square-mile prototype dust control measure(DCM)on the South Sand Sheet(SSS)of the Owens Dry Lake bed.The objective of the monitoring system was to collect aerosol,meteorological,particle flux,and sun photometry data.The system consisted of thirteen 10-meter instrument towers,an array of 54 Big Springs Number Eight(BSNE)sand traps,and five Sensit~(TM)particle counters.Operating a monitoring system of this size and complexity in an environment as harsh as Owens Dry Lake presented a number of technical and logistical challenges,which are discussed in this paper.
