Considering railway switch plate greases and wheel flange lubricants as examples,the structure,properties and applications,the criteria for selection and more than 10 years practical experience are dealt with.Much has been reported and described on biodegradable lubricants and such terms as ecotoxicity,"Blue Angel"and the use of re-growing raw materials.In the laboratory and in practice new knowledge has been continuously acquired with corresponding lubricants.All these works demonstrate that from lawmakers,through the manufacturers to the users increasing efforts have to be made to relieve the environment by the planned utilization of alternative raw materials and finished products,thereby helping to maintain present standards of living for future generations.
