^7fToday halogen free flame retardant compounds (HFFR) have become widely used. Functional polyolefins such as ethylene-vinyl acetate or ethylene-acrylate copolymers as well as maleated terpolymers have become the materials of choice as the base resins for these compounds. They allow producing flexible compounds while keeping adequate physical properties. Their polarity facilitates the necessary introduction of high filler content such as aluminum trihydroxide (ATH) and magnesium dihydroxide (MDH) while keeping a good processability. A new method has been designed to crosslink functional polyolefins. It is based on the reaction of diamine with a maleic-anhydride containing polyolefin. The diamine is trapped into a molecular sieve during the extrusion of the compound. Then it is released after wire coating using moisture and temperature. The method allows to produce compound with better thermal and solvent resistance.
