Design and Performance Testing of a New Central Tube Cable for 7/5.5 mm Microducts

The presented work shows that with an optimized design, it is possible to provide a robust cable with less than 4 mm outer diameter and as many as 24 single mode fibers for blown installation into microducts of 5.5 mm inner diameter. Materials and design considerations as well as low-temperature performance, ease of installation and blowing performance are reported, which lead to a cable design with an optimized balance between maximum fiber content, minimum dimensions and maximal robustness for use in access networks.
