The appliance consists of a conductive part and an insulated part with a ring electrode at a high voltage in the form of an intermediate flange (3). A support electrode (6), for accepting the field control element (8) to be tested, is mounted between two porcelain insulators (4,5). Located within the insulators is a central electrode at earth potential consisting of a tube (11) sealed off with a sphere (12). To provide better contact, an insulated pressure bushing can be fitted on the support electrode and the electrode upper section can be matched to the shape of the field control element. For the test the space between the insulators can be filled with an insulating medium, e.g. silicone oil or an insulating gas.
