Redox properties of a series of tetra- and pentanuclear polyhydride clusters were examined using cyclic voltammetry.These clusters showed multistep redox waves and its potentials became negative with increase in the number of the methyl groups introduced in the cyclopentadienyl ligands.The same trend was observed as the nuclearity of the cluster increases.The reactivity of 1 toward alkynes was also examined.Reaction of la with internal alkyne afforded bis-mu_3-alkylidyne cluster at the end as a result of C-C bond cleavage via skeletal change of the Ru_4 framework.
