Helicenes possessing inherent helical chiralities have been attracting increasing attention owing to their extraordinary optical and electronic properties. In addition to the previously reported photocyclization reaction, new methodologies for their synthesis have been developed. As a part of our program aiming at establishing efficient methods for the synthesis of helical molecules, we have developed an approach to helicene synthesis, which involves palladium-catalyzed double C-H arylation reaction utilizing Z,Z-bis(stilbene)s.
