Synthesis, Structures, and Reactivity of Heteronuclear Platinum Group Metal Imido Clusters

There is much current interest in the chemistry of hetero-numetal-metal bonded clusters because of their versatile electronic structure, bonding, and reactivity. Late transition metal terminal and (mu_2-bridging imido complexes are one of the promising precursors to such type of clusters, since they usually contain unsaturated M-N bonds with nucleophilic nitrogen, and are expected to react with a variety of coordinatively unsaturated metal fragments. Bergman has shown that the Ir imido complex [Cp*Ir(NBu~t)] is successfully utilized for the synthesis of the Ir-Zr heterobimetallic imido clusters, however, this synthetic strategy has met with few extension to other late metal imido systems. Recently a dinuclear Ru imido complex {(Cp*Ru)_2(mu_2-NPh)(mu_2-CH_2)] with a potentially reactive methylene bridge has been prepared in our laboratory, and its transformation into the heterobimetallic Ru-Pt cluster 1 has been communicated (Scheme 1). Herein we describe a detailed investigation into the reactivity of 1 as well as the preparation and reactivity of a related Ir-Pt cluster.
