This paper will discuss the selection process of an on-line analysis of the discharge from a Sour Water Stripper. The Suncor Energy Tar Island facility has initiated two major expansions over a period of ten -(10) years. A dedicated effort was made to update the design to take advantage of modern technology during the engineering of each expansion. Reliable measurements for trace levels of both Hydrogen Sulphide (H{sub}2S) and Ammonia (NH{sub}3) in the "Stripped Sour Water" has been of particular interest in the latest expansion project. Suncor utilizes two steps in the stripping of the sour water: first the process stream is routed to the Sour Water Flash Drum; and secondly the Sour Water is then routed to the Sour Water Stripper. The Stripped Sour Water is then routed back to the process units. Unacceptable levels of H{sub}2S in process water can cause severe operating issues in the vent recovery unit. Unacceptable levels of Ammonia (NH{sub}3) in the off spec water that has diverted to the storage ponds can lead to upsets in the level of anaerobic bacteria. Potential off gassing of either H{sub}2S or NH{sub}3 from either the process water streams or the storage ponds has been identified as an unsafe operating condition for the plant personnel. The primary focus of this paper is the actual process analyzer and method of analytical technique. The sample conditioning system is not considered.
