Case Report: Hypoiodite Delivery for Treatment of Mastitis

The economic costs associated with mastitis include loss of income from discarded milk during antibiotic treatment, multiple veterinary interventions due to increased antibiotic resistance amongst mastitis-causing bacteria, and poor milk quality for extended periods. Increasingly, the cost of culling and replacing chronically infected animals is also a feature of mastitis management. An effective alternative to antibiotic therapy would be most advantageous for the control of mastitis, particularly ifmilk discard was not required. Earlier intervention by farmers to prevent onset of acute infection would be facilitated, promoting both better milk quality and herd health. Hypoiodite (10) is an antimicrobial agent, which can be produced by the reactionof peroxide with a suitable substrate, namely iodide (I"). The aim of this study was: (i) to demonstrate the activity of IO" against causative agents of mastitis in vitro; and (ii) to deliver 10" as a novel treatment for chronically infected mastitic cows in vivo.
