Animal models of kidney disease have been invaluable in determining the pathogenesis of human kidney disease. Most of the animal models have looked at the pathogenesis of glomerulonephritis and we now understand much about the pathogenesis of many ofthese lesions. A new area of interest has been the pathogenesis of glomerufar scarring which is seen in many types of human diseases as well as spontaneously in animals. Some insight into this process is summarized in this talk including recent data on the importance of the podocyte in this process. We will also discuss the pathogenesis of acute tubular necrosis and relevant animal models, Finally, the pathogenesis of tubulointerstitial nephritis will be summarized including the findings from animal studies.
