The collection of data used in the cattle improvement business in the Netherlands and Belgium is done primarily by the four regional offices of the CRV Holding (CR Delta in the Netherlands, VRV in Belgium) and a number of independent organisations. During the past 20 years farmers became used to report animal movements and birth registrations directly by telephone (voice response) or computer (edi or Internet) into the central database. The amount of other data collected by farmers themselves is increasing. Today a part of the milk recording data and treatments of diseased cows are directly entered by the farmer.The product division NRS of the CRV Holding is taking care of the databases and software used forthis data collection. NRS is active in breeding value estimation, managerial support, and automation in the areas of cattle improvement and managementThe main areas where data are collected are in:Pedigree registration.Registering of inseminations, ET's and natural services.Milk production registration.Registration of classifications.Registration of other traits (health, body condition, etc.).NRS developed a new generation of Herd Management Systems for farmers and advisors. It is based on Internet technology and the available data in the central database. This system is also the backbone of milk recording and herdbook registration. Farmers rely more and more on "VeeManager", rather then using a PC herd management system.
