Swiss Noise Study 2000: Aircraft noise annoyance in the neighbourhood of the airport Zurich-Kloten

Within the Swiss Noise Study 2000, an aircraft noise annoyance survey has been carried out in the surroundings of the airport Zurich-Kloten. In August 2001, 1826 persons filled out a noise annoyance questionnaire. Several aircraft noise measures were calculated for the residential of each subject. In this article, the dose-effect-curves between aircraft noise and annoyance will be presented. The correlation between aircraft noise and annoyance is rather small. It can be shown that persons concerned with civil aircraft react in a different way to the noise than persons living in areas with military jet noise. An interesting finding was that annoyance is unexpectedly high in regions with no or very little civil aircraft noise. The variance of the noise annoyance can partly be explained when considering several moderators such as ecological attitude, satisfaction with acoustical aspects of dwelling, or attitude towards air traffic.
