Resident's Expectations concerning External Vehicle Noise in a Berlin Soundscape

Soundscape is an environment which may be limited in the way people feel a sound belonging to an environmental area. Physical, social, psychological, cultural, and situational conditions are relevant to determine a particular individual and/or collective behaviour, attitude, and emotion towards a noise source. The concept of noise annoyance needs to be broaden to an integrated environmental, psycho-social, and socio-economic assessment of the community situation. This may lead to a more realistic basis for environmental impact assessment. How people react to a specific noise source, in this case road traffic noise, is shown by assessments of so called context related sound events. In a survey on acoustical environments inhabitants have perceptually segmented their street by social criteria. Additionally, the road surface plays an important role. The combination of methods with different sensibilities for subjects' process of perceiving and evaluating noise in such environments is necessary for a reliable and valid analysis and interpretation of data. The procedure to measure such perception and first available data will be presented.
