The tire/road noise reduction is an important issue of the environmental protection. In the German joint project "Leiser Verkehr" ("Silent Traffic") the interaction of tire and road surface is one of the main research topics. Partners from the car, tire and road industry, universities, the TUV (Technical Service) and the German Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) are cooperating for a significant road traffic noise reduction. The paper deals with the results from the road optimization and the first tire evaluation loop where the design was systematically varied. 40 sets of tires were tested on five different concrete and asphalt pavements. The influence of tire and road parameters on the noise generation will be discussed.
