In this paper, an error model for measuring sound power using sound intensity measurement with the rectangle scanning surface and the orthogonal scanning path is established. Then the relationships between the scanning directions, the distance from the measurement surface to the sound source, the density of the scanning lines and error are investigated with the monopole and dipole sources as examples. Some measures to decrease the error are proposed. It is shown that, to a given scanning surface, when the density of the scanning lines is small, error may be decrease to zero or a very small value by adjusting the distance from the scanning surface to the sound source; In most cases, the error scanning along the longer side of the rectangle is smaller than that along the shorter side.
