SELECTING SUBSTRATES FOR ORGANIC TRANSPLANT PRODUCTION

Organic potting mixes blended by growers utilizing incorporated organic fertilizers are a viable option for transplant production. While the addition of soluble organic fertilizer may be required in the final weeks of transplant production, it would be considerably reduced in comparison to the commercial organic potting mixes trailed in these experiments. Should a grower choose to utilize such a mix, it is recommended that the pH and EC of the mix be monitored prior to use and that seed be germinated in a substrate known to be low in salt and otherwise conducive to seed germination.
