Several factors play a crucial role in arriving at effective prediction and compensation of machine tool thermal error. Machine accuracy varies depending upon the operating conditions used. The thermal error model needs to be capable of accounting for such differences. In addition, the specific positioning accuracy measurement method adopted also affects the performance accuracy of the compensation system. This paper attempts to present, through specific experimental tests, the impact of different factors on the accuracy of the thermal error prediction system. The performance of the hybrid thermal error model developed for predicting the axis positioning accuracy is evaluated based on the tests conducted.
