Although there are a number of similarities between a conventional landfill and a landfill bioreactor, a large number of differences also exist. This paper contrasts the features of the two concepts of landfilling based on a critical review of the current design and operation practices of landfill bioreactors in relation to leachate management and gas management. Leachate recirculation requires the use of a variety of methods of mixing leachate with waste, some are not applicable in cold climates. An excellent understanding of leachate hydrology within the waste matrix is required to ensure problems such as leachate ponding, leachate leakage from side-walls or landfill instability are not created during leachate recirculation. In bioreactors, gas recovery systems should be designed and installed with careful consideration given to settlement issues and time-dependent changes to gas permeability from changes to waste density and moisture content.
