Although there are a number of similarities between a conventional landfill and a landfillbioreactor, a large number of differences also exist. This paper contrasts the features of the two conceptsof landfilling based on a critical review of the current design and operation practices of landfill bioreactorsin relation to leachate management and gas management. Leachate recirculation requires the use of avariety of methods of mixing leachate with waste, some are not applicable in cold climates. An excellentunderstanding of leachate hydrology within the waste matrix is required to ensure problems such asleachate ponding, leachate leakage from side-walls or landfill instability are not created during leachaterecirculation. In bioreactors, gas recovery systems should be designed and installed with carefulconsideration given to settlement issues and time-dependent changes to gas permeability from changesto waste density and moisture content.
