RIVER RESTORATION CONSIDERING GEOMORPHOLOGICAL BOUNDARY CONDITIONS

Currently, many European rivers are in a state of erosion, a situation which strongly requires river restoration measures. River restoration must consider a few basic rules if it is to succeed. The main geomorphological boundary conditions, i.e. grain size and geology of the river bed and bed load input, as well as the morphological state of a river, i.e. braided, meandering or forming alternate bars, must be taken into account. Considering these factors ensures the ecological enhancement and sustainable redevelopment of a river. Also, the planning process and the engineering design tools must correspond to the complexity of the problem. Following the water management frame study for the river Salzach it is shown how an interdisciplinary planning process can lead to proposed adequate solutions. This example may be viewed as a case study for solving similar problems.
